Ben Casey

For an extra $20, I’ll give Homer a tick bath and spay him. — Veterinarian, “So It’s Come to This: A Simpsons Clip Show”

The hunky, hirsute veterinarian who appears in the first Simpsons clip show (and previously in Dog Of Death) is modeled after the titular character in Ben Casey, a ’60s medical drama starring a guy named Vince Edwards.

Quite the shock on that one. Though Edwards’ genetic makeup was clearly copied by George Clooney decades later, Mr. Tall-Dark-And-Handsome never had a comic strip modeled after him, I’ll bet.

Ah, Rex Morgan, M.D. … Ben Casey’s introduction and theme song also pops up in a few Simpsons eps, if I’m not mistaken. Take a look:

Compare that with Bart’s arrival to the hospital in Bart Of Darkness. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
