It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

No, no, dig up, stupid. — Chief Wiggum, “Homer The Vigilante”

It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, released in 1963, is a comedy film with a plot heavily resembling the back nine of “Homer The Vigilante”: a bunch of unscrupulous yeggs race to uncover a fortune buried beneath a ‘big W’.

I’m no authority, but Mad World may hold the record for largest ensemble cast in a comedy, and not just cameos, either. The film featured Jack Benny, Milton Berle, Ethel Merman, Jimmy Durante, Mickey Rooney (!), Buddy Hackett, Jonathan Winters, Don Knotts, Jerry Lewis, Peter Falk, Buster Keaton, and even a lackluster incarnation of the Three Stooges, and those are just the names I recognize.

Anyway, all three hours of Mad World appear to be available on YouTube at the moment if you want to truly appreciate the end-game hijinks of “Vigilante”.
