The Falling Solider

The memory of a million drop stitches flows in your veins. — Marge, “Bart’s Dog Gets An F”

Robert Capa, Loyalist Militiaman at the Moment of Death, 1936.

Despite a string of allegations that the photographer faked this impressively-timed photograph depicting the death of a soldier during the Spanish Civil War, it is generally believed that the above shot (NPI) is the genuine article. An entire documentary was produced addressing the controversy, as was one historian’s theory that the photo’s setting/subject matter was fudged for the sake of journalistic flair.

If there are any SHS readers that also happen to be veterans of the Spanish Civil War, now is the time to come forward with any information you might have that could at last put this dispute to rest. Thanks.
