The Great Gazoo

Ah, ye’ve done grand, laddie. — The Leprechaun, “This Little Wiggy”

Ralph’s imaginary (?) pyromaniac sidekick is a reference to The Great Gazoo, a whimsical little extraterrestrial that haunts Fred Flintstone’s living nightmare.

Gazoo, voiced by by Mel Brooks go-to Harvey Korman, was introduced midway through the sixth and final season of The Flintstones, prompting criticism that the show was losing steam by adding such a bizarre gimmick. Fortunately, the show’s producers had the foresight to humanely kill off the series shortly thereafter, avoiding the embarrassment that results when a once-beloved franchise is dragged through the muck year after year with no signs that the madness will ever end.

Oh, and just one more thing. The Gazoo character is also of course referenced in The Simpsons Spin-Off Showcase, in the form of Homer’s new friend Ozmodiar. So settle down out there.

In Germany he was called “Galaxius von Saxius” and had a saxon dialect, which was mainly spoken in Eastern Germany. So he wasn’t just an alien, he was a communist alien.
