Dukakis And The Tank

Oh, get off your soapbox, Simpson! Do you realize how much it costs to run for office? More than any honest man could afford! — Mr. Burns, “Two Cars In Every Garage And Three Eyes On Every Fish”

(Apologies for piling on Duke again, but it’s not like he’s going to fight back…)

Michael Dukakis’s ill-conceived photo op during his 1988 presidential bid was another misstep on the road to putting Magog in the executive seat.

The tank set was designed to allay voters’ concerns about the Democratic candidate’s perceived softness in the war department, specifically those deriving from Duke’s controversial proposal that all cavalry fighters wear neckties and have their names glued to their helmets in case they forgot.

Oddly enough, Burns’s similar positioning in the top screenshot (taken from “Mother Simpson”) was the second time Monty had been so choreographed. The first was actually in “Two Cars…”, quoted above, in which he very briefly pops out of a tank whilst on the campaign trail against Mary Bailey. Say, whatever happened to her?

Haha, Dukakis looks like Klinger from MASH.
