The universally beloved Phillie Phanatic was called up in 1978 to spread joy and hot dogs to the weary denizens of Veteran’s Stadium.

Hailing from the Galapagos Islands, the Phanatic was intended as a goofy substitute for the stadium’s previous mascots, Revolutionary War vets Philadelphia Phil and Phillis:

(These guys replaced the team’s previous previous mascot, a giant D-cell battery.)

Though he never speaks, the Phanatic has apparently faced a bevy of lawsuits due to his “busy hands”…these are generally of the crackpot variety, however.

This funny montage should wrap things up. You have to admire whoever it is that’s willing to skydive wearing that costume:
