My Ding-A-Ling

This act is over! — Principal Skinner, “Lisa’s Pony”

Chuck Berry’s sole number one hit in the U.S., My Ding-A-Ling is the story of an American guitarist and his tool. Filled to the brim with double entendre, the song does have a few choice lines.

Once I was swimming ‘cross Turtle Creek
Many snappers all around my feet
Sure was hard swimming ‘cross that thing
With both hands holdin’ my ding-a-ling

Naturally, Chuck Berry’s salacious hit, recorded in 1972, drew the ire of the usual moralizers, in this case U.K. whack-job Mary Whitehouse, who attempted to get the song banned from the airwaves.

Why is it that every single right-wing reactionary type has those eyes?

2012 is really going to suck.

Anyway, Berry managed to weather the Whitehouse treatment, and My Ding-A-Ling remains one of the better penis-themed cuts of the era.
