Somebody check the men’s room for a Hugh Jass! — Moe, “Flaming Moe’s”
Among the earliest recorded prank calls, the series of conversations between New Jersey’s Bum Bar Bastards and retired heavyweight boxer/Tube Bar proprietor Louis “Red” Deutsch served as the model by which the Bart-Moe calls went down.
After retiring from the boxing circuit, Red took to managing his bar fulltime. When the Bastards began ringing the bar, he was in his 70s—arguably the height of his old man crotchetiness:
Why you yellow rat bastard, you motherfucker, cocksucker. Your mother’s been sucking my prick for many years… Why don’t you come over and meet me face to face, you motherfucker… I’ll meet you wherever you want. — Louis “Red” Deutsch”
For our enjoyment, the recordings of the prank calls are readily available on the Internet (and on Amazon):
It’s hard to believe he would keep falling for these guys (though in that video he outwits them about half the time), but it’s worth pointing out that people didn’t have cell phones back then, and calling your neighborhood bar was often the way to get in touch.
Personally, I would be a bit more wary of drawing the ire of a former heavyweight boxer with a penchant for violent outbursts, but, you know, diff’rent strokes.
