Billy Beer

Wow, my concert-going jacket still fits! And this is where I used to hide my beer…[gasp]…Billy Beer! — Homer, “The Otto Show”

Brewed by the Louisville, KY-based Falls City Brewing Company in the mid-1970s, Billy Beer has the distinction of being named after the beer swilling brother of history’s greatest monster, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter.

Younger brother Billy was something of a wild card, a drunken good ol’ boy who abandoned the family peanut farm to serve as spokesman for his own beer, a decent trade-off. Billy Beer was an immediate hit, but fizzled out quickly, with the brand folding shortly thereafter.

Luckily, Billy himself wasn’t out of the spotlight, with a steady stream of public appearances that probably didn’t help his brother’s failed bid for reelection. Among other scandals, Billy got in hot water when he entered into some very suspicious wheelings and dealings with the Libyan government.

Billy succumbed to pancreatic cancer in 1988, but thanks to The Simpsons (and eBay), the legend of his beer lives on.
